Our Story
Skin Literacy Lab was born in the exam room. As a dermatologist, Dr. Lauren Taglia frequently encountered young patients struggling with skin issues exacerbated by misinformation and educational gaps. Witnessing the rising influence of social media trends on adolescent skincare, she realized that a physician-designed, science-backed approach was needed to intervene before harmful habits took root.
We focus on middle schoolers because ages 11–14 represent a pivotal window for developing lifelong health habits. This is a time of physical change when students are most vulnerable to marketing yet most capable of learning foundational science. Our programs teach skin anatomy, sun safety, and ingredient literacy, equipping students with the tools to understand the skin they're in.

Skin Literacy Lab is a nonprofit in formation pursuing 501(c)(3) status and believes every student deserves access to accurate, science-backed skin health education.

Meet the Founder
Dr. Lauren Taglia, MD, PhD, FAAD, is a board-certified dermatologist and dedicated mother who founded Skin Literacy Lab to bridge a critical gap in health education. Having observed firsthand the rising confusion among her young patients, she was motivated to take action beyond the exam room. Her initiative focuses on middle schoolers during a pivotal window of development, providing them with the science-backed education they need to navigate a world filled with skincare misinformation. Through physician-designed programs, she teaches students how their skin functions, the truth about sun safety, and how to critically evaluate the products marketed to them.
